Build Your Board Career

Women on Boards in partnership with Bluescope Steel is returning to Wollongong on 6 & 7 May 2010 for a second series of its powerful networking and professional development events. These focus on building women's opportunity, capacity and desire to be on boards. All events are suited to both current and aspirant directors as well as women who may not be contemplating board roles right now, but who are ambitious and want to contribute at either a local, state or national level.

Boards in Focus

Thursday 6 May 2010
5:30pm – 8:00pm
Cost: $55 Non-subscriber, $44 WOB subscriber (bring a guest for an additional $22), $22 student

This is a networking event with a panel discussion around the opportunity a directorship offers to give back to your community and industry and develop yourself as a professional board member. The event is strongly recommended to anyone who is looking to take the next step on their directorship pathway and seeking to build their networks.

Panel members are Nicki Bowman (Director Blackthorn Resources Limited), Janelle Bond (Director Peoplecare Health Insurance) and Michael Bassingthwaighte ( Chair HAMB Systems & Defence Health and director of the Australian Health Services Alliance, NSW Exceptional Drugs Committee and Illawarra Business Chamber)

Men and women in later stages of their career are encouraged to attend and bring a younger guest.

Workshop: Getting Started - Realising Your Board Potential

A workshop specifically designed to assist you with strategies for board and career development. Provides an overview of what it takes to be a director and strategies for including board work in your career.

Workshop: Getting Serious - Brand YOU

Thursday 6th May
1:30pm - 4:30pm
Cost: $121 per head for WOB subscribers and $165 for non subscribers

This workshop is designed for people seeking a marketing and networking plan to support the next steps on their board career.

WOB Workshop: Getting Serious I: Your Directorship Action Plan

Friday 7th May
9:00am - 12:00noon
Cost: $143 per head for WOB subscribers and $187 for non subscribers

The workshop is for people seeking individually tailored advice about industry sectors and boards they might target. We recommend that participants have completed the Getting Started II workshop, have their board CV in reasonable shape and be actively looking at board roles.

Panellists

Nicki Bowman
Nicki is a director of Blackthorn Resources Limited, an ASX listed mining and exploration company, and heads their Audit and Risk Committee. She is also a director of Football South Coast Limited, a not-for-profit company which is the peak affiliated body for the administration of football in the Illawarra region. Nicki came to board work having gained extensive experience as a corporate and commercial lawyer in private practice within a Top 10 Australian law firm. Nicki then held Senior Corporate Counsel positions in BHP and Bluescope Steel, before moving into Senior Management and Executive positions.  Her experience included key roles in Merger and Acquisition transactions, leading contract negotiations, and managing corporate restructures. Nicki holds a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree from the University of Sydney.

Janelle Bond
Janelle is employed at BlueScope Steel as Applications Manager and has extensive experience in the IT Industry.  As an elected member on the BlueScope Steel Superannuation Policy Committee Janelle has the role of monitoring the trustee and overseeing the members’ interests. Janelle is an experienced director and has served on the Peoplecare Health Insurance Board since 2005 where she is a member of the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee and was formerly the Chair of Business Strategy Committee.  In 2008 Janelle was appointed as Chair of the Wollongong City Council Governance Committee that was established to ensure that Wollongong City Council operates in an effective and efficient manner utilising a sound corporate governance framework.  Her professional qualifications include a Bachelor of Information Technology (Information Systems), MBA (Commercial Law) and she is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Directors.

Michael Bassingthwaighte
Michael has an extensive career in health insurance initially with a seven year period with Medicare / Medibank Private and then joined Peoplecare Health Insurance (then Lysaght Hospital and Medical Fund) in 1982 as CEO, a position he holds to this day. Michael is also the Chief Executive of National Health Benefits Australia Pty Ltd. During this period Michael has been an active participant and contributor to the health insurance industry and has played a major role in representing the interests of smaller health funds within the industry.  Previously Michael has also been an industry advisor on the Private Health Insurance Administration Council (PHIAC) for a period of 5 years, an industry representative on the National Health Data Committee and President of the NSW Health Funds Association.
